Things most newcomers don’t know

The Outer Ring Road is why Hyderabad works better than Bengaluru.

A 158km eight-lane orbital connecting the airport, the tech corridor and the wider metropolitan area lets long journeys bypass the centre entirely. Bengaluru has no equivalent, which is the single biggest reason its traffic is worse. Learning to route via the ORR rather than through the city is the local driving skill.

Telangana road tax on a new vehicle is a percentage of its cost.

Registration attracts a life tax calculated on the vehicle's price rather than a flat fee, which on a new car is a substantial one-off. It is worth factoring into the buy-versus-lease decision, and into whether to buy new or used.

Driving yourself is genuinely realistic here, unlike Mumbai or Bengaluru.

Wide roads in the western corridor, a functioning orbital and lower density than the other big tech cities make self-driving a reasonable choice. Plenty of foreign residents in Hyderabad drive; far fewer do in Mumbai. It is a real quality-of-life difference between Indian postings.
