Hamburg's district customer centres handle the Anmeldung by appointment. Availability is better than Munich's but the whole downstream chain waits on it, so book as soon as you know your move date and take any district rather than only the nearest.

Things most newcomers don’t know

The EU Blue Card is materially better than a general work permit.

It gives faster access to a settlement permit, easier family reunification with immediate work rights for a spouse, and more freedom to change employer. Employers frequently default to whatever process they know rather than the best available. If you meet the salary and qualification thresholds, ask for the Blue Card by name.

Church tax is 9% here against Bavaria's 8%.

Hamburg, like most German states, levies church tax at 9% of your income tax liability if you declare membership of a recognised church. Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg charge 8%. The declaration happens in a short registration appointment and most newcomers do not realise it carries an annual cost.

No Steuer-ID means emergency tax class until it arrives.

Until your employer has your tax identification number, payroll applies the least favourable class and takes a large bite from early pay packets. It is refunded once registered, but the first months of an expensive move are exactly when you need the cash.

Hamburg's appointment situation is genuinely better than Munich's.

Both cities require an Anmeldung appointment, but Hamburg's district customer centres are less oversubscribed than Munich's Bürgerbüros. It is one of several ways Hamburg is administratively easier for a newcomer, alongside a considerably less competitive housing market.
