Getting set up in India

Legal & IDHigh confidence

Employment visas and registering in Haryana, not Delhi

India's employment visa is employer-sponsored with a minimum annual salary threshold, and registration with the FRRO within 14 days is mandatory for visas valid over 180 days. The Gurgaon-specific point is jurisdictional: you register with the office covering your Haryana address, not with Delhi's FRRO, even if your employer's registered office or your colleagues are in Delhi.

DrivingMedium confidence

Haryana registration, the Delhi border, and monsoon gridlock

You may drive on a valid foreign licence with an International Driving Permit for a limited period after arrival, then need an Indian licence from the Haryana RTO covering your address. The Gurgaon-specific considerations are the state boundary โ€” a Haryana-registered vehicle driven daily into Delhi runs into Delhi's own vehicle age restrictions โ€” and the drainage, which turns heavy rain into gridlock with a reliability the city has never fixed.

BankingMedium confidence

Opening an Indian bank account as a foreign national

Which account you can open depends on your residential status under FEMA, not your visa. A foreign national resident in India for employment can generally open an ordinary resident savings account. Everything requires a PAN card and thorough KYC. Gurgaon's Cyber City and Golf Course Road branches process foreign documentation constantly, which makes this noticeably faster here than in most of India.

HealthMedium confidence

Medanta, Fortis, and the same winter air as Delhi

Gurgaon has some of the best private hospitals in India โ€” Medanta, Fortis and Artemis among them โ€” built substantially to serve the corporate population and medical tourism, and priced at a fraction of Western equivalents. The dominant health issue is shared with Delhi: severe winter air quality from late October to January, which requires concrete preparation rather than general awareness.

TelecomMedium confidence

Getting an Indian SIM as a foreign national

India requires full identity verification for every SIM, and for foreign nationals that means passport, visa, photographs, local address proof and sometimes a reference, followed by a verification step. SIMs issued to foreigners carry validity tied to the visa. Losing the number locks you out of UPI and bank one-time passwords, which makes getting it right the first time worth the effort.

TaxMedium confidence

Indian income tax, and what Haryana does and does not charge

You are tax-resident in India if you spend 182 days or more in a financial year, or 60 days or more in the year plus 365 across the preceding four. The new regime under section 115BAC has been the default since AY 2024-25 โ€” lower rates, very few deductions โ€” with the old regime available by election. Gurgaon counts as a metro for the house rent allowance formula, which matters if you elect the old regime and pay condominium rents.

Language

Essential Hindi phrases

GurugramDaily life
goo-roo-GRAM
The official name since 2016. Almost everyone still says Gurgaon in conversation; official documents use Gurugram. Both are correct in context.
Cyber CityDaily life
SY-ber SIH-tee
The office district where most multinationals sit, with Cyber Hub โ€” the restaurant and bar complex โ€” attached. The centre of gravity for corporate Gurgaon.
SectorDaily life
SEK-ter
Gurgaon is laid out in numbered sectors rather than named neighbourhoods. Your address is a sector number, and locals navigate entirely by them.
CondoDaily life
KON-doh
A gated apartment complex with its own security, power backup, water supply and amenities. In Gurgaon this is the default way professionals live, not a luxury.
RWADaily life
ar-dubl-yoo-ay
Resident Welfare Association โ€” the body governing a condominium or sector. It controls maintenance, security, parking and disputes, and it matters to your daily life.
TankerDaily life
TANK-er
A water tanker. Much of Gurgaon's water supply depends on tankers and borewells rather than piped municipal supply, and 'is the water tanker-fed?' is a real question when renting.
GurujamTransport
goo-roo-JAM
The name given to the 2016 gridlock when a day of heavy rain trapped traffic for over twenty hours. Shorthand for what happens when the drainage fails.
AQIEmergency
ay-kyoo-eye
The Air Quality Index. Gurgaon shares Delhi's winter air, checked daily from October and openly discussed in every office.
AravallisDaily life
AH-rah-vah-leez
The ancient hill range on the city's southern edge โ€” the last green lung of the NCR, with trails and a biodiversity park, and under constant development pressure.
JugaadCulture
joo-GAAD
An improvised, resourceful workaround. In a city where the infrastructure regularly falls short, this is less a cultural note than an operating principle.
Golf Course RoadTransport
โ€”
The main north-south corridor of new Gurgaon, lined with the most expensive condominiums and offices. Addresses are described by their relationship to it.
112 / 100Emergency
โ€”
112 is the national emergency number. 100 for police and 101 for fire still work and are more widely known.

Reading a list isnโ€™t learning it. Globe Quest turns these into a trainer โ€” hear each phrase spoken, drill them with spaced repetition, and get scored as you say them out loud.

Culture

What to know before you go

Gurgaon is in Haryana, and that changes your paperwork

Critical

Twenty kilometres from Delhi, but a different state: a different FRRO jurisdiction for registration, different stamp duty on your rent agreement, different vehicle registration and road tax, and different school admission systems. Register with the FRRO covering your Gurgaon address, not Delhi's. People who commute into Delhi routinely assume otherwise and have to start over.

The building's own infrastructure is the thing you are actually renting

Critical

Gurgaon's municipal drainage, water and power supply have never kept pace with its towers, so the good condominiums provide their own: full power backup on a diesel generator, water from borewells and tankers with treatment, and internal drainage. Ask concretely โ€” does the generator power my whole flat or only the lifts, where does the water come from, does the basement flood. These questions matter far more than the kitchen finish.

Register with e-FRRO within 14 days if your visa is over 180 days

Critical

Employment visa holders with a visa valid over 180 days must register within 14 days of arrival, online through e-FRRO, with passport, address proof, appointment letter, employment contract and proof of income. No agent is needed. Use the office with jurisdiction over your Gurgaon address.

The winter air is Delhi's air

Critical

Gurgaon sits inside the National Capital Region airshed and experiences the same severe air quality from late October to January โ€” routinely 'very poor' and often 'severe'. Budget for proper HEPA purifiers in bedrooms and workspaces and spare filters, and treat N95 masks outdoors in December as normal. This is a genuine health consideration, especially with children.

Get a PAN card immediately

Critical

The Permanent Account Number gates banking, salary and most financial transactions, and without it your employer must deduct tax at a higher rate. Foreign nationals can apply online. Start it in week one.

The monsoon commute is the local test of a place to live

Important

Gurgaon floods, sometimes catastrophically โ€” the 2016 gridlock lasted over twenty hours after a single heavy day. Ask specifically whether the route between your flat and your office is one of the known flooding stretches, and whether the condominium's own basement and approach road hold up. Long-term residents can tell you; the brochure cannot.

Work

Top industries & employers

Consulting & professional services

McKinsey, BCG, Bain, Deloitte, EY, KPMG, PwC

Gurgaon holds the largest concentration of management consulting in India, serving both domestic corporates and global delivery work.

Global capability centres

American Express, Genpact, Concentrix, EXL, Nagarro

The GCC model โ€” multinationals running large analytics, finance and engineering operations in India โ€” is more concentrated here than almost anywhere, and it is the sector most likely to sponsor a foreign posting.

Technology & consumer internet

Google, Microsoft, Adobe, Zomato, Paytm, Policybazaar, Urban Company

A consumer-internet scene distinct from Bengaluru's โ€” heavier on commerce, fintech and services marketplaces than on deep engineering.

Automotive & manufacturing

Maruti Suzuki, Hero MotoCorp, Honda Cars, Denso

The Gurgaonโ€“Manesar belt is one of India's largest automotive clusters, and the reason the city grew in the first place.

Financial services & insurance

American Express, Fiserv, Max Life, ICICI Lombard, HSBC

Back-office and analytics operations for global financial institutions employ tens of thousands here, largely in Cyber City and Udyog Vihar.

Real estate & construction

DLF, Godrej Properties, M3M, Emaar India

DLF effectively built modern Gurgaon, and property development remains one of the largest local industries and the main driver of local politics.

Explore

Where to go in Gurgaon

Aravalli Biodiversity Park

Nature ยท Sector 52A, off Golf Course Road

380 acres of restored native forest on a former mining site, now the city's green lung with walking and cycling trails.

Local tip: Go at dawn before the heat and while the air is at its least bad. The restoration project has brought back leopard sightings and over 200 bird species on land that was bare rock twenty years ago.

Sultanpur National Park

Nature ยท Farrukhnagar, 30 minutes west

A wetland bird sanctuary that hosts thousands of migratory birds from Siberia and Central Asia between November and March.

Local tip: Winter is the season โ€” the same months when the air is worst in the city, but the park is far enough out that conditions are usually better. Go early on a weekday with binoculars.

Cyber Hub

Food ยท DLF Cyber City

A dense restaurant and bar complex attached to the main office district, and the default after-work destination for corporate Gurgaon.

Local tip: It is where everyone goes and it is genuinely convenient, but the better and cheaper food is in Sector 29's market and the smaller places off Golf Course Road.

Damdama Lake & the Aravalli trails

Nature ยท Sohna Road, 45 minutes south

A reservoir in the Aravalli hills with trekking, cycling and rock climbing, and a genuine escape from the city.

Local tip: The weekend cycling and trail-running community here is large and welcoming. Go with a group the first time; the trails are unmarked and the hills look more uniform than they are.

Farrukhnagar & Sheesh Mahal

Culture ยท 35 minutes west

An 18th-century walled town with a Mughal-era palace, a stepwell and a salt-trading history, almost entirely unvisited.

Local tip: The Baoli Ghaus Ali Shah stepwell is remarkable and you will likely have it to yourself. Combine it with Sultanpur, which is nearby, for a half-day out of the towers.

Sohna Road's Aravalli sunrise points

Hidden gem

Nature ยท South Gurgaon toward Sohna

Ridge viewpoints in the Aravallis where the NCR's haze sits below you and the sun comes up over the hills.

Local tip: On a clear winter morning you can be above the smog layer looking down on it, which is both beautiful and a stark illustration of what you are breathing at ground level. Go with someone who knows the tracks.
