Things most newcomers don’t know

Sixty kilometres decides whether you get 15 points or none.

Brisbane is one of only three cities in Australia excluded from designated regional status. The Gold Coast is Category 2 and included. Same state, same nomination authority, same hour on the motorway — and a materially different points score on the 491, plus access to regional streams and an extra year of post-study work rights. For a points-tested applicant this is frequently the difference between an invitation and a wait.

Queensland's nomination program runs in windows, not continuously.

Unlike South Australia's broad standing lists, Business and Skilled Migration Queensland publishes criteria and opens for defined periods, and the occupation lists change between rounds. People miss out not because they were ineligible but because they were assembling a skills assessment when the window opened. Get the assessment and the English test done first and treat the window as the thing you wait for.

The dominant local industries are largely outside the skilled lists.

Tourism, hospitality, retail and much of construction labour are the Gold Coast's biggest employers and mostly do not appear on skilled occupation lists, or appear at salary levels below the Core Skills Income Threshold. The parts of the local economy that do support skilled migration are health, the universities, marine engineering, screen production and professional construction roles. Aim at those rather than at the industries the city is famous for.

Half the urban area is in another state, and the visa rules do not care but everything else does.

Tweed Heads is New South Wales. A job or an address on that side means NSW licensing, NSW tenancy law, NSW stamp duty with its 9% foreign purchaser surcharge, chargeable NSW ambulance, and a different hour for five months a year. Your visa is identical either side; nothing else is. Check which state an address is in before you sign anything — the boundary runs through suburban streets, not around the edge of the city.

Common mistakes to avoid

Taking a Brisbane job because it is the capital, and losing the 15 regional points the Gold Coast would have given you.
Assuming Queensland nomination is open when it runs in defined windows with changing occupation lists.
Building a migration case on a hospitality or tourism role that is not on any skilled list.
Accepting an offer that clears the local market rate but sits under the Core Skills Income Threshold.
Renting or taking a job in Tweed Heads without registering that you have crossed into New South Wales.
