The dos and don’ts that help you fit in fast — and avoid the mistakes newcomers make in their first weeks.

What to know before you go

Scotland sets its own income tax, and the Higher rate starts much earlier

Critical

The Scottish Higher rate bites at £43,662 against £50,270 in England and Wales, and Scotland has five bands where England has three. Anyone earning above roughly £33,500 pays more income tax here than in Manchester; below that, around 55% of Scottish taxpayers pay less. For 2026-27 Scotland raised its Basic and Intermediate thresholds by 7.4% while the UK Government froze all of theirs. Check your PAYE code starts with an S.

Glasgow's Low Emission Zone is enforced and it catches people

Critical

Scotland's first LEZ came into enforcement in the city centre in June 2023, and unlike an English clean air zone it is not a charge you can pay — non-compliant vehicles are penalised, with the penalty doubling on each repeat within a rolling period. Check any car you are buying or bringing against the emissions standard before it enters the zone, and check the boundary, which is tighter than most people assume.

Scottish tenancies are open-ended and you can leave on 28 days' notice

Critical

Since 2017 the Private Residential Tenancy has replaced fixed terms in Scotland. There is no end date: the tenancy continues until you end it with 28 days' notice, or the landlord ends it on one of a defined list of grounds. This is materially more tenant-friendly than England's system even after the Renters' Rights Act, because the Scottish notice period is 28 days against England's two months.

Apply for a National Insurance number as soon as you land

Critical

You can only apply from inside the UK, and payroll needs it to tax you correctly. Some visa categories already have one printed in the remarks on an old BRP, so check before applying. Without it you can work legally, but you will likely be put on an emergency tax code and have to reclaim.

Ask who factors the building before you sign a tenement lease

Important

Most Glasgow tenements have shared roofs, closes, gutters and stairwells, and their maintenance is organised by a factor who bills the flats. As a tenant you should not be paying factoring charges directly — but you will absolutely live through the disruption of a major common repair, and a building with deferred repairs and a disputed factor is a bad flat regardless of how good the interior photos look. Ask the letting agent who the factor is and whether any common repair is outstanding.

Glasgow is significantly cheaper than Edinburgh for the same quality of life

Important

Rents run roughly 20-25% below the capital for comparable flats, the West End and Southside tenement stock is as handsome as anything in Edinburgh, and the cultural life is arguably better — Glasgow is a UNESCO City of Music with more live venues than any other Scottish city. What you give up is the Old Town postcard, the festival, and slightly drier weather.
