The San Joaquin Valley is among the most polluted air basins in the United States — ozone in summer from heat and traffic trapped by the mountains on three sides, fine particulates in winter from wood smoke and agriculture held down by inversions. Practically: check the daily air index the way you would check the weather, run a HEPA filter indoors, take the winter wood-burning restrictions seriously because they are why the air is not worse, and if anyone in the household has asthma, raise it with a doctor before you move rather than after.

Coccidioidomycosis is caused by a fungus living in Valley soil; you get it by breathing in spores raised by wind or digging. The California Department of Public Health says the San Joaquin Valley reports the most cases in the state, and that California recorded nearly 12,500 cases in 2024 — its highest ever, up from under a thousand a year before 2000. Most infections resolve; a minority become serious. Outdoor workers, gardeners and anyone on a construction site are the higher-risk groups. Wet the soil before you dig, and if you get a cough and fever that will not clear after a dusty job, say the words 'Valley fever' to the doctor.

Everything at state level is identical to the coastal Californian cities: income tax to 12.3% plus the 1% Mental Health Services Tax above a million, State Disability Insurance withheld on every dollar since the wage cap was removed in 2024, and no conformity with foreign tax treaties. What differs is the base it is applied to and what you pay for locally. A one-bed here runs USD 1,100–1,450 in the Tower District against three times that in San Jose, sales tax in the City of Fresno is 8.350% against 9% and above across much of Los Angeles County, and Proposition 13 pins your property tax to a Valley purchase price.

Los Angeles, San Jose, San Diego, San Francisco, Oakland, Pasadena and dozens of Bay Area cities have adopted their own minimum wage ordinances above the state rate. Fresno has not. So the floor here is California's statewide USD 16.90 an hour from 1 January 2026, indexed annually to CPI-W with a 3.5% annual cap. If you are hiring, budgeting an hourly workforce or comparing an offer against a coastal one, this is one of the concrete ways the Valley is a cheaper place to employ people and a lower-paying place to be employed.

California gives you 20 days to register a vehicle you bring in once you become a resident, and the DMV defines residency broadly — intending to live here six months or more, taking a job, registering to vote, or getting a licence. A Smog Check is required every other year to renew registration, plus on a change of ownership; gasoline vehicles from 1975 and earlier, diesels from 1997 and earlier, electric vehicles and motorcycles are exempt, as are vehicles eight model years old or newer at renewal. The inspection price is not regulated, so shop around; the certificate fee is fixed at USD 8.25.

Tule fog settles on the Valley floor from November to February, drops visibility to a few metres and does not lift for days at a time. It is the direct cause of the multi-vehicle pile-ups Highway 99 is known for. If you are new to it: slow right down, use low beams rather than high, do not stop in a traffic lane, and be willing to leave later. The other half of the year is the opposite problem — Fresno summers regularly run above 38°C for weeks, and the heat is dry enough that an evaporative cooler works, which is why older houses have them.
