Fort Bliss, the 1st Armored Division, William Beaumont Army Medical Center, Biggs Army Airfield, White Sands Missile Range an hour north in New Mexico
Fort Bliss is one of the largest US Army installations in the country and the single biggest employer in the region, with a training range extending far into New Mexico. Most direct roles require US citizenship and often a clearance, so treat this as context for the local economy rather than an accessible job market on arrival — but the contractor, construction and services layer around it is very large.
Cross-border manufacturing & logistics
the Juárez maquiladora base — Foxconn, Bosch, Lear, Aptiv, Electrolux and hundreds more — plus El Paso-side warehousing, transload, customs brokerage and freight forwarding
Hundreds of thousands of manufacturing jobs sit on the Juárez side and a large part of El Paso's professional economy exists to serve them: customs brokers, logistics managers, quality engineers, trade lawyers and bilingual plant management who commute across. This is the single most distinctive career market in the city and it does not exist anywhere else in Texas at this scale.
Health care & medical education
University Medical Center of El Paso, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso and the Foster School of Medicine, El Paso Children's Hospital, The Hospitals of Providence, Las Palmas Del Sol
University Medical Center is the county hospital district and the region's only Level I trauma centre; the Foster School of Medicine was built specifically to train doctors for the border region. Health care is the sector most likely to be hiring regardless of what the rest of the economy is doing, and bilingual clinicians are in permanent demand.
Higher education & public sector
the University of Texas at El Paso, El Paso Community College, the City and County of El Paso, El Paso, Ysleta and Socorro school districts
UTEP is a doctoral research university with a student body that is overwhelmingly Hispanic and largely local, and it is one of the region's largest employers. Between the university, the community college, three big school districts and two levels of local government, the public sector provides an unusually large stable employment floor for a city this size.
Shared services, back office & bilingual operations

El Paso's deep bilingual labour pool and low costs made it a standing destination for customer-service, claims-processing and shared-service operations. These are the jobs most accessible to a newcomer without a clearance or a licence, and genuine Spanish–English fluency is worth a real premium in them.
Trade, retail & tourism
the downtown retail district serving Mexican shoppers, hotels around the convention centre, the Ysleta-Zaragoza and Bridge of the Americas commercial crossings
A significant share of downtown retail exists to serve customers who cross from Juárez to shop, which makes parts of the local economy sensitive to the peso and to border policy in a way nowhere else in Texas is. It cuts both ways and it is worth understanding before assessing the retail and hospitality job market.
