Edmonton is the capital, so the civil service, the regulators and the policy apparatus are here rather than in Calgary. It is a large, stable employer base and it is the main reason the city's economy tracks the oil price less closely than Calgary's does.

The University of Alberta is among the province's largest employers and anchors a genuinely serious medical research cluster — transplantation, cardiac care and oncology in particular — that has no equivalent elsewhere in the province.
Artificial intelligence & research computing
Amii (Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute), University of Alberta computing science, spinouts across the city
Amii is one of Canada's three national AI institutes alongside Vector in Toronto and Mila in Montreal, built on the reinforcement learning group at the University of Alberta. It is the least-known thing about Edmonton internationally and one of the most substantial.
Hydrocarbon processing & petrochemicals
Alberta's Industrial Heartland — Imperial Oil Strathcona, Shell Scotford, Dow, Inter Pipeline Heartland, Nutrien
The largest hydrocarbon processing region in Canada sits immediately north-east of the city. This is refining, upgrading, petrochemicals and fertiliser — physical plant and trades work — rather than the head-office energy sector of Calgary, and it is being pushed toward hydrogen, biofuels and critical minerals.

PCL, one of North America's largest contractors, was founded and headquartered here, and the Heartland's turnaround cycle sustains a large, well-paid and genuinely in-demand trades workforce across the region.
Logistics, aviation & northern supply
Edmonton International Airport and its cargo hub, CN Rail, Canadian trucking and northern resupply operators
Edmonton is the staging point for northern Alberta, the Northwest Territories and the oil sands, which makes it a serious freight and logistics city — the airport has built a substantial cargo and industrial operation around exactly that role.
