Doha culture & etiquette

The dos and don’ts that help you fit in fast — and avoid the mistakes newcomers make in their first weeks.

What to know before you go

Greet with your right hand

Critical

The left hand is considered unclean — always shake, eat, and give with your right.

Respect Ramadan fasting hours

Critical

Don't eat, drink, or smoke in public during daylight in Ramadan, even if you're not fasting.

Friday is the holy day

Important

The work week runs Sunday–Thursday. Many places open late on Fridays after prayers.

Dress modestly in public

Important

Shoulders and knees covered, especially in malls, souqs, and government buildings.

Ask before photographing people

Important

Especially women and locals in traditional dress — always get consent first.

Accept the coffee

Good to know

Declining offered Arabic coffee (gahwa) can read as rude — take at least a small cup.
