Essential Ukrainian phrases

'Good day.' Dnipro was a Russian-speaking industrial city and the shift to Ukrainian since 2022 has been substantial without being total; you will hear both daily. Opening in Ukrainian is the right instinct and nobody will correct you for trying.

'Thank you' and the reply. 'Прошу' doubles as 'here you are' and 'go ahead' — you will use all three at a counter in the same minute.

The city was renamed in 2016 under the decommunisation laws. The OBLAST is still Dnipropetrovsk oblast, so official forms and the tax office use the old long name while the city does not — this is not an inconsistency to correct, it is the actual legal position.

Outage schedule. Rolling power cuts by queue ('черга'), published a day ahead, plus emergency cuts with no notice. Ask which queue a flat is in before you rent it.

Curfew — 00:00 to 05:00 in Dnipro city as of 2026, but genuinely different elsewhere in the oblast: shorter evenings in Nikopol district and earlier still in parts of Synelnykove. Check the destination, not the region, before you drive.

'The bill, please.' Contactless works everywhere, including on the metro turnstiles, until the power goes — keep two or three thousand hryvnia in notes at home.

Air-raid alert. Dnipro sits on the approach to several fronts and gets a lot of them, including short-notice ballistic alerts. 'Відбій тривоги' is the all-clear.

Shelter. Important local nuance: Dnipro's metro is a single line of six stations and is NOT the shelter network Kharkiv's and Kyiv's are. Here shelters are marked basements, underpasses and purpose-built rooms — find yours rather than assuming a station is near.

Evacuation. In Dnipro this is not an abstraction — the city is where people arriving from the fighting further east are received, and mandatory evacuation orders apply to communities inside Dnipropetrovsk oblast itself.

Volunteer — and in Dnipro a job description rather than a hobby. The city's volunteer logistics networks move medical supplies, vehicles and equipment east on a scale that shapes daily life, and 'я волонтерю' is a completely ordinary answer to what someone does at weekends.

The Cossack-derived name proposed for the city and the oblast during decommunisation. The city chose Dnipro, but Січеслав survives in the local university, in business names and in how people talk about the region's identity — a useful word to recognise.

'Enjoy your meal', said by waiters, colleagues and strangers. Answer 'дякую'. Dnipro's restaurant scene was one of Ukraine's best before 2022 and a surprising amount of it is still running.
