Three global automakers headquartered within 40 km of each other, plus the deepest supplier and engineering base in North America. Ford reopened Michigan Central Station in Corktown in June 2024 as a mobility campus, which pulled a software and startup layer into the city proper.
Mortgage & fintech
Rocket Companies, Ally Financial, Flagstar
Rocket anchors downtown and, with Bedrock, owns a large share of the central business district outright — which is why downtown Detroit's revival is so concentrated and so visibly single-owner.
Health care
Henry Ford Health, Corewell Health, Detroit Medical Center, Wayne State University School of Medicine
The largest employer category in the city after government, and the most reliable source of professional hiring that is not tied to the automotive cycle.
Defence & ground vehicles
US Army DEVCOM Ground Vehicle Systems Center, General Dynamics Land Systems, BAE Systems
The army's ground-vehicle centre at Warren makes metro Detroit the centre of US military vehicle engineering. Most roles require US citizenship and a clearance, which rules them out for most new arrivals.
Cross-border logistics

The busiest commercial land crossing between the United States and Canada, and the artery a large share of North American auto parts moves through. Customs, freight forwarding and trade compliance are real local professions here.

A small but genuine design and consumer-brand cluster that grew out of cheap space downtown in the 2010s, alongside the music industry infrastructure the city never entirely lost.
