Prepare for winter and for the roads themselves

Things most newcomers don’t know

Insurance, not rent, is often the biggest number that changes between neighbourhoods.

Michigan premiums are rated at fine territorial granularity, and Detroit's are among the highest in the country. Two flats a mile apart on either side of Eight Mile can differ by more per month in insurance than they do in rent. Anyone choosing a neighbourhood on rent alone here is optimising the smaller number.

The 2019 reform changed what you buy, not just what you pay.

Before July 2020 Michigan required unlimited lifetime personal injury protection — the reason premiums were the highest in the nation. Drivers now choose a level, and lower levels are cheaper and cover less. Opting out entirely requires qualifying health coverage. Choosing the cheapest tier without understanding what it means after a catastrophic crash is the trap the reform created.

The Michigan left is safer and completely counter-intuitive.

Removing left turns across traffic cuts the conflict points at a junction, which is why the state built its arterials this way. But a newcomer's instinct at a 'no left turn' sign is to look for another route, and the correct response is to drive through and U-turn at the crossover. Watch one before you need one.

Public transport will not substitute for a car here.

The city's DDOT buses and the suburban SMART system are separate operations, the QLine streetcar covers one stretch of Woodward, and the People Mover is a downtown loop. The metro is spread across three counties. Unlike Minneapolis or Chicago, going car-free in Detroit is a constraint rather than a choice — which is exactly why the insurance number matters so much.
