The I-70 traction law is enforced and the fines escalate.

Between 1 September and 31 May, vehicles on I-70 in the mountain corridor must have adequate tread plus all-wheel drive, snow tyres or chains. A driver who blocks the highway because they were unequipped faces a significantly higher penalty than one merely non-compliant. Newcomers with a rear-wheel-drive car and summer tyres discover this on their first ski trip.

Colorado's registration tax scales with the car's value.

The specific ownership tax is assessed on vehicle value and depreciates with age, so registering a new car can cost many hundreds of dollars in the first year and much less by the fifth. It is a genuine consideration when choosing what to buy, and it surprises people expecting a flat registration fee.
