- Employment with a Tanzanian employer, for PAYE
Step-by-step
- 1

Free and online. Required for payroll, banking, property transactions and your driving licence conversion.

Give the TIN to your employer
Employment income is withheld under PAYE at graduated rates. Social security contributions to NSSF or PSSSF are deducted alongside.

Work out your residency position
Presence of 183 days or more in a year of income makes you resident, among other tests. A resident is taxed on income from all sources, not just Tanzanian-source income.

Declare income outside PAYE
Consultancy fees, rental income and foreign income remain your responsibility even when your salary is fully withheld.

Keep tax clearance current for permit renewals
Employer tax clearance is part of the permit file, and personal compliance becomes relevant on renewal. Unfiled returns become an immigration problem.

Things most newcomers donβt know
The TIN is the master key in Tanzania and it costs nothing.
Payroll, bank account, property transactions and the driving licence all run through TRA. Registering in your first week converts three separate blocking dependencies into none. It is the single highest-return administrative task available to a new arrival here.

Tanzanian tax residency reaches worldwide income.
183 days in a year of income makes you resident, and a resident is taxable on income from all sources. Retained consultancy clients abroad, rental income at home and foreign investment income are all in scope. People who assume PAYE on the Tanzanian salary closes the matter are frequently wrong, and the gap surfaces years later.

Employer tax clearance is part of your immigration file.
Immigration requires the employer's tax compliance evidence in the permit application, so a company with filing problems becomes your permit problem. If you are joining a small or newly-registered Tanzanian entity, ask about its TRA standing before you accept β it is the least-asked and most consequential due-diligence question here.

Compare offers net, not gross.
PAYE at graduated rates plus statutory social security contributions produce a gross-to-net gap wider than the headline income-tax rate suggests, and it differs from Kenya's and Uganda's. Comparing a Dar offer with a Nairobi one on gross salary gives you the wrong answer β ask for a net illustration for each.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Leaving the TIN until three other processes are already blocked on it.
- Assuming PAYE settles everything when you also have foreign or consultancy income.
- Joining a small Tanzanian employer without checking its TRA compliance standing.
- Comparing regional offers on gross salary and ignoring statutory deductions.
- Missing annual filing deadlines and creating a compliance problem that surfaces at permit renewal.
