The universal greeting; reply 'wa alaykum as-salaam'. In the Eastern Province you will hear 'hala wallah' thrown in immediately after, which is warmer than it sounds.

SHNOO
'What' — the Gulf form used across the Eastern Province and shared with Bahrain and Kuwait. Riyadh says 'wesh', Jeddah says 'eesh'. This one word places you geographically.
زين
ZAYN
'Good / fine / okay' — the all-purpose Gulf approval word. 'Zayn?' as a question means 'alright?' and 'mu zayn' means not good.
ماكو
MAA-koo
'There isn't any' — an Eastern Province and Iraqi form you will not hear in Riyadh. 'Maaku shughul al-yom' — no work today.
الشمال
ash-sha-MAAL
The shamal — the north wind that carries dust across the Gulf coast, sometimes for days. When people say 'there's a shamal coming', they mean cancel the outdoor plan.
Culture
الشرقية
ash-shar-QEE-ya
'The Eastern' — how everyone refers to the Eastern Province. People say they live in the Sharqiyah before they say which of the three cities.

a-RAAM-ko
Saudi Aramco. In this region it is not just an employer but a unit of measurement — people describe where they live and who they know relative to it.

khu-ROOJ wa ʿAW-da
Exit and re-entry permit. You need one every time you leave the Kingdom — including a Friday afternoon in Bahrain — and you request it yourself on Absher.

Rabbitfish — the Gulf's everyday eating fish, grilled whole. Ordering safi at a Dammam fish restaurant marks you as someone who has been here a while.
