Editor's picks
A local's shortlist — the places worth your time first, each with a tip.
The English Market
Food · Grand Parade / Princes Street, city centre
A covered market trading since 1788 — butchers, fishmongers, cheesemongers and a mezzanine restaurant above the stalls.
Local tip: Go to the Princes Street side for the fish and the tripe-and-drisheen counter, then eat upstairs at the Farmgate, which looks down over the whole market. Midweek mornings are calm; Saturdays are not.
Shandon & St Anne's Church
Landmark · Northside, up the hill from the river
The red-and-white steeple that appears on everything Cork prints, with a clock whose four faces disagree and a bell tower visitors ring themselves.
Local tip: You climb the tower and play the bells yourself from sheet music — nobody stops you. Locals call the clock the four-faced liar. The Butter Museum next door is better than it sounds.
MacCurtain Street & the Victorian Quarter
Nightlife · North bank, east of the bridges
The city's drinking and eating quarter, rebuilt around Victorian frontages between the North Channel and the hill.
Local tip: Start in the older bars around Coburg Street rather than the new places on MacCurtain itself. This is Rory Gallagher's ground — the city council maintains a signed walking trail through it.
Sunday's Well & the Lee Fields
Neighborhood · West of the centre along the north channel
Terraces stacked up the hillside above a long riverside meadow where the city walks, runs and swims.
Local tip: People swim in the Lee at the Fields all year, and the walk out along the Mardyke and back through Fitzgerald's Park is the standard Cork Sunday. Bring shoes you don't mind soaking — it floods.
Cobh & Spike Island
Culture · Cork Harbour, 25 minutes by commuter rail
The Titanic's last port of call, a cathedral on a cliff above painted terraces, and a fortress prison island in the harbour below.
Local tip: The train from Kent Station is the point — it runs along the water most of the way. Spike Island ferries go from Kennedy Pier and the last one back is early, so check it before you settle into Cobh for the afternoon.
Ballycotton Cliff Walk
Hidden gemNature · East Cork, about an hour from the city
A waymarked clifftop path above a working fishing village, with a lighthouse on an island offshore.
Local tip: Do it in reverse from Ballyandreen so the village and the pub are at the end rather than the start. It is far quieter than the Kerry and West Cork walks people drive past it to reach.
