A valid licence from another US state generally converts at a deputy registrar. A foreign licence generally means the knowledge test and a road test at a driver exam station first, and then the licence at a deputy registrar. Confirm your case with the BMV before setting out — it decides how many trips you make.

If you take a flat in Covington or Newport, you register in Kentucky, not Ohio, and Kentucky levies an annual ad valorem property tax on vehicles collected with the registration — a recurring cost Ohio does not have. That is a real difference in the running cost of a car and it does not show up in a rent comparison.

Work out whether Metro actually serves your commute
Metro runs buses across Hamilton County, funded since 2020 by a county sales tax levy rather than by a slice of the city income tax, plus the Connector streetcar loop through downtown and Over-the-Rhine, which has been fare-free since 2020. TANK runs the Northern Kentucky side and crosses the river. Check your specific pair of addresses rather than the network map.

Plan around the hills and the ice, not the distance
Cincinnati is built on steep hillsides and a handful of routes carry everything up and down them. A mile as the crow flies can be fifteen minutes, and an untreated hill in freezing rain is genuinely impassable. Learn which of your routes are steep before the first ice event, and keep decent all-season or winter tyres.

Learn the Brent Spence pattern if you cross the river
The double-decked I-71/75 bridge into Kentucky is functionally obsolete, carries far more traffic than it was designed for, and is the metro's chronic bottleneck. Alternatives exist — the Taylor Southgate, the Clay Wade Bailey, the Big Mac and the far-east Combs-Hehl — and locals route around the Brent Spence habitually. Things most newcomers don’t know

Hamilton County has no emissions test, which quietly saves you a recurring errand.

Ohio's E-Check programme covers only seven counties in the north-east of the state — Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage and Summit. Registering and keeping a car in Cincinnati therefore skips a step that Cleveland, El Paso and Baltimore all require, and that San Antonio acquires in November 2026. Do not pay anyone for a Hamilton County emissions test.

Registering in Kentucky costs more every year than registering in Ohio.

Kentucky levies an annual ad valorem property tax on motor vehicles, assessed on the car's value and collected with the registration renewal. Ohio does not. Someone comparing a Covington flat to a Cincinnati one on rent alone is missing a recurring several-hundred-dollar difference on any reasonably recent car. Price the whole package, not the rent.

The transit levy moved from the income tax to the sales tax in 2020, which is why the numbers do not match old articles.

Cincinnati's bus network used to be funded from a slice of the city earnings tax. In 2020 voters replaced that with a Hamilton County sales tax levy, and the city income tax rate came down from 2.1% to 1.8% on 2 October 2020 in consequence. Any comparison of Ohio city tax rates written before then has Cincinnati wrong.

The hills are the routing constraint, not the traffic.

Cincinnati sits in a basin with steep sides and a limited number of routes climbing them. Neighbourhoods that look adjacent on a map — Clifton and Northside, Mount Adams and downtown — can be separated by a long detour, and in an ice event some of those routes simply close. Look at a topographic map before you decide a commute is short.
