What to know before you go
Alberta health cover starts immediately — no waiting period, unlike BC, Ontario or Quebec
CriticalThe Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan covers you from the date you establish residency, with no premiums and no three-month gap. This is genuinely unusual in Canada and it is one of the more valuable practical differences between provinces. Register as soon as you arrive with your immigration document and proof of an Alberta address — the coverage date follows your residency date, not your paperwork date, but the card is what clinics ask for.
There is no provincial sales tax, and it is worth more than the headline suggests
CriticalAlberta charges only the 5% federal GST where British Columbia adds 7% and Quebec nearly 10%. Combined with the lowest income tax rates in the country and no payroll health levy, the take-home difference against Vancouver or Montreal on the same salary is substantial. This is the actual reason for the migration into the city, and it is the number to run before comparing headline salaries between provinces.
Apply for your SIN in the first week — nothing about being paid works without it
CriticalThe Social Insurance Number is issued free by Service Canada and is required before an employer can put you on payroll. In person at a Service Canada centre it is usually issued on the spot; online takes longer. Bring your passport and work permit or Confirmation of Permanent Residence. Leaving it until after your start date delays your own first paycheque.
Your credit history does not come with you, and it gates renting here too
CriticalWhatever your record elsewhere, in Canada you start at zero, and Calgary's tightened rental market means landlords now run credit checks that they largely did not a decade ago. The fix is a secured credit card used lightly and paid in full monthly, plus one of the newcomer packages the major banks run. Start in month one, because a usable score takes months to build.
Rents rose faster here than anywhere in Canada, and the cheap-Calgary reputation is out of date
ImportantThe province's active recruitment of residents from Ontario and British Columbia produced the largest interprovincial migration Canada has recorded, and the rental market absorbed it badly. Calgary is still meaningfully cheaper than Vancouver or Toronto, but the figures people quote from a few years ago are no longer real. Budget from current listings rather than from reputation.
Hail is a genuine insurance consideration here, not a curiosity
Good to knowCalgary sits in Canada's most hail-prone corridor and has produced some of the country's costliest hailstorms on record. It shapes real decisions: whether a rental has covered parking, whether a house has an impact-resistant roof, and what your vehicle and contents insurance actually cover. Ask about hail cover specifically rather than assuming a standard policy handles it.
