Get a BursaKart and work out whether you need a car
Buy and load the card at station machines, kiosks or in the app; it covers the Bursaray metro, the trams, city buses and the Uludağ teleferik with transfer discounts. Then ask the real question: where do you work? The old centre, Nilüfer and the university are all reachable on the network. The automotive plants and the organised industrial zones are not well served by it — but almost every large employer runs a servis shuttle from the residential districts, and using it is normal rather than a fallback.

Book BUDO for Istanbul, not the coach
BUDO's fast ferries run from Mudanya and Güzelyalı on the Marmara coast to Istanbul in roughly two hours. Book online in advance — summer weekends and Sunday evenings sell out, and turning up at Mudanya without a seat is a long wait. The alternative is driving over the Osmangazi Bridge in about two and a half hours plus a substantial toll, or the intercity coaches from the terminal. For a same-day meeting in Istanbul the ferry is usually both faster door to door and considerably more pleasant.

Drive on your foreign licence for up to 6 months
You may drive on a valid home-country licence for up to 6 months from your date of entry. Carry a notarised Turkish translation at all times, or an International Driving Permit — required if the licence isn't in the Latin alphabet and asked for at roadside checks. Once you hold a residence permit, relying on the foreign licence gets legally risky, so treat the exchange as the next step.

Exchange your licence at a Bursa İlçe Nüfus Müdürlüğü
Book through the national NVİ portal (randevu.nvi.gov.tr, or Alo 199) and attend in person at your district population office — Osmangazi, Nilüfer, Yıldırım and the rest each have one. Türkiye's reciprocity agreements cover the EU, UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea and many more, so eligible nationalities exchange with NO written or practical exam. Bring the original licence and a notarised Turkish translation, residence permit, tax number, a driver health report (sağlık raporu), one biometric photo, blood type and the fee receipt.

Optional: owning a car, and the mountain road in winter
Cars are expensive because of ÖTV stacked on VAT — which is a particular irony in the city that builds them. You will need compulsory trafik sigortası, the biennial TÜVTÜRK muayene and an HGS transponder for the motorway and the Osmangazi Bridge. The Bursa-specific driving fact is the Uludağ road: it climbs to the hotel zone and is genuinely alpine in winter, with chains or winter tyres routinely required and the road closed in bad weather. Most people take the teleferik in winter for exactly that reason.

Things most newcomers don’t know

The employer shuttle (servis) is the real commuting system in Bursa, and it is not a consolation prize.

The plants and the organised industrial zones sit outside the transit network, so nearly every large employer runs free shuttle buses from the residential districts. Newcomers buy a car assuming they must, then discover a servis stops two streets from the flat they picked. Ask HR for the route map before you decide where to live, let alone what to drive.

The cable car is on the transit card, which quietly makes a ski mountain part of your commute-priced life.

The 8.8 km teleferik from Teferrüç to about 1,870 m on Uludağ runs on BursaKart like a bus. Being able to get from a city tram to alpine meadows or a ski slope on one card, in about half an hour, is close to unique among cities this size.

Two hours to Istanbul by sea is the whole economic case for living here.

BUDO's fast ferries from Mudanya and Güzelyalı reach Istanbul in roughly two hours, and the Osmangazi Bridge put the drive at about two and a half. Bursa rents run at a fraction of Istanbul's, so people take the difference and buy the ferry ticket when they need the city — but book ahead, because summer and Sunday-evening sailings sell out.

Most nationalities exchange their licence with no driving test at all.

Türkiye's reciprocal recognition agreements cover the EU, UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea and many others, so eligible holders swap at a district Nüfus office after submitting documents. People routinely budget time and money for an exam they do not need to sit.

Common mistakes to avoid

Buying a car before asking HR whether a servis shuttle already covers your route to the plant.
Turning up at Mudanya for a BUDO sailing without booking, on a summer weekend or a Sunday evening.
Driving on your home licence past the 6-month window, or after getting residency, without exchanging it.
Taking the Uludağ road in winter without chains or winter tyres — it closes in bad weather, and the teleferik exists for a reason.
