CriticalUK government advice for the Republic of the Congo is specific: always carry a colour copy of your passport including the visa entry stamp, and residents should carry a copy of the residence card as well. Vehicle checkpoints are frequent throughout the country and poorly marked; when stopped, stay inside the vehicle and show documents through a closed window. Photographing police, government buildings, military installations, the airport or bridges is prohibited and gets people detained.
Malaria is the health risk that should change your routine, every month of the year
CriticalWHO's Africa office recorded close to a million malaria cases and 2,250 deaths in the Republic of the Congo in 2025, and in April 2026 the health authorities met in Brazzaville to prepare introducing a malaria vaccine into the national immunisation programme. Falciparum malaria here is year-round, not seasonal. Prophylaxis, a net and repellent are the standard package, and a fever is a same-day rapid test rather than a wait-and-see.
There is no ambulance number — choose your clinic before you need it
CriticalThe FCDO states plainly that there is no central number for emergency services in the Republic of the Congo, that medical facilities are limited, and that medical evacuation is likely to be necessary for all but the most basic treatment. The practical model is international insurance that names evacuation, plus one clinic's direct number in your phone. France Diplomatie's own contact list for Brazzaville names the embassy's centre médico-social, Clinique NETCO, Clinique ELIKIA and the CHU on Avenue Lyautey.
The Pool sits between Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire, and it is the reason the road is a decision
ImportantThe Pool department is the corridor the RN1 and the Congo-Océan railway both run through to reach the coast. A ceasefire with the Ninja insurgency was signed in 2017, but UK government advice still tells travellers to take extra care in the Pool region and Mouyondzi district, and warns that violent clashes could resume with little or no notice. Most people making the Brazzaville–Pointe-Noire trip fly. Treat the overland option as a plan that needs current local advice, not a scenic alternative.
The CFA franc is fixed to the euro — and is not the CFA franc from Dakar
ImportantThe Central African CFA franc (XAF) is pegged at 655.957 to the euro, which makes your euro budget stable and your dollar budget move with EUR/USD rather than with anything Congolese. It shares its name, its symbol FCFA and its exact rate with the West African CFA franc (XOF) used in Senegal or Côte d'Ivoire, and the two are separate currencies: XOF notes are not legal tender here. Card acceptance is thin outside hotels and the big supermarkets; MTN MoMo and Airtel Money are the retail rails people actually use.
Greet first, dress like you meant it, and expect the paperwork to want photographs
Good to knowWalking into an office and opening with your request lands badly — ask after the person and the family first. On clothes, Brazzaville is a Sape city and takes appearance seriously. And keep a stock of identical passport photographs: the residence-card file wants four, the driving-licence file wants four, and every counter in the city seems to want two more.
