Things to do in Bratislava

Landmark · Devín, north-west edge of the city

A ruined fortress on a crag where the Morava meets the Danube, with the Gate of Freedom memorial below it to those shot trying to cross the Iron Curtain here.

Local tip: Take bus 29 from Nový Most rather than driving. The cliff path gives you Austria on one bank and Slovakia on the other, and the memorial at the confluence is the part visitors walk past.

Nature · Petržalka, across the Danube from the Old Town

A large riverside park laid out in the 1770s, among the oldest public parks in Central Europe, with a Gothic church tower standing oddly in the middle of it — moved here from the Old Town in the 1890s.

Local tip: Cross on the Old Bridge and walk the length of it to Aupark. Locals run and picnic here; the tourist crowd stays on the north bank and never comes over.

Nature · Devínska Nová Ves

A pale sandstone cliff inside the city that is the fossil floor of a Miocene sea, with shark teeth and shells still weathering out of it.

Local tip: Combine it with the Devínska Kobyla ridge and the cycling bridge over the Morava to Austria. Almost nobody outside Bratislava knows the city has a sixteen-million-year-old sea bed in it.

Food · Rača, Svätý Jur, Pezinok — north-east along the ridge

A chain of wine villages starting inside the city boundary at Rača, with family cellars, Grüner Veltliner and Frankovka, and open-cellar weekends twice a year.

Local tip: Rača is reachable on a city ticket; Svätý Jur and Pezinok are a short regional train. Go to the open-cellar day (deň otvorených pivníc) rather than a restaurant — you buy a glass and walk between cellars.

Neighborhood · Ružinov / Danube embankment

The city's rebuilt commercial core — a bus station with a market hall on its roof, and a riverside promenade running east from the Old Town past the new tower district.

Local tip: The Nivy market hall on the top of the bus station is the good part: local producers, a food court and a rooftop garden, and it is where people actually eat rather than in the mall below.

Culture · Above the Old Town, Staré Mesto

A Soviet war memorial and military cemetery on the highest hill in the city centre, with the widest view over Bratislava, the Danube plain and — on a clear day — Austria.

Local tip: Walk up through the villa quarter rather than driving. Go around sunset; it is a working cemetery, so it stays quiet even when the Old Town below is not.
