What to know before you go
Massachusetts has an individual health insurance mandate, and it starts at 63 days
CriticalUniquely among the states in this app, Massachusetts requires adults to carry coverage meeting its Minimum Creditable Coverage standard, and the requirement applies to people who become Massachusetts residents within 63 days. The penalty is assessed through your state tax return and can reach 50% of the lowest monthly premium you would have qualified for. Nobody with an employer plan needs to worry — but if you arrive without one, the clock starts immediately.
Your foreign licence probably cannot be converted here
CriticalMassachusetts converts licences without a written or road test only from Canada, Mexico and US territories. A German, Japanese, Australian or Indian licence gets you nothing — you take the learner's permit exam and a road test as a new driver. This is the narrowest arrangement of any state in this set. Texas waives exams for five countries and Florida requires only a vision test; Massachusetts does neither, and an International Driving Permit cannot be converted either.
Almost every lease in this city starts on 1 September
CriticalBoston's rental market is structured around the university calendar, and the overwhelming majority of leases run 1 September to 31 August. The consequence is 'Allston Christmas' — the entire city moving on the same day, with no moving trucks available and furniture abandoned on every pavement. If you arrive off-cycle you'll have far less choice; if you arrive on-cycle, book movers months ahead.
Broker fees are still normal here, unlike New York
CriticalNew York abolished tenant-paid broker fees with the FARE Act in June 2025. Massachusetts did not. A fee of one month's rent, paid by the tenant, remains standard in Boston, on top of first month, last month and a security deposit. Budget four months' rent to move in, and treat any listing that is genuinely no-fee as worth moving on quickly.
The flat 5% income tax has a 4% surtax on top
ImportantMassachusetts taxes income at a flat 5%, which is simple and, for a high earner, considerably better than California or New York. Above a threshold — $1,107,750 for the 2026 tax year, indexed annually — an additional 4% surtax applies to the excess. Note the surtax catches one-off events: selling a company, a large equity vest or a house sale can push a single year over the line even if your salary never does.
You may genuinely not need a car
ImportantBoston is small, dense and walkable by American standards, and the T covers most of what you need. Car ownership brings resident parking permits, street-cleaning rules and, above all, snow: after a declared snow emergency the city bans parking on major routes and tows aggressively. Many people here deliberately go without.
