Declaring membership of a recognised church at your Anmeldung triggers automatic deduction of church tax at 9% of your income tax liability in NRW — the standard rate in most German states, against 8% in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. Declaring no affiliation means no church tax. It is decided in a five-minute appointment most newcomers do not realise carries an annual cost, and leaving later needs a formal appointment and a fee.

Everyone resident in Germany must hold health insurance, and employees below an annually-set income threshold join the statutory system while those above it may go private. Staff of the UN organisations and some other international bodies are usually covered by their own institutional schemes instead, under the relevant headquarters agreements. Stadtbahn line 16 runs from Bad Godesberg all the way into Cologne, line 18 from Bonn Hbf, and both sit inside the VRS network that the Deutschlandticket covers. That makes Bonn and Cologne effectively one labour market and one social scene — many people live in one and work in the other, and it is the reason Bonn can be a small city without feeling like one. It also means that when Bonn's rents look high, the answer is often to look one town along the line rather than to leave.
