Johns Hopkins is the largest private employer in Maryland and the reason a mid-sized city has a world-tier research base. It also means the city's professional hiring is unusually concentrated in one institution — a factor worth weighing if you are moving with a partner who needs work too.
Federal government & defence

The Baltimore–Washington corridor holds one of the densest concentrations of cleared work in the country. Most of it requires US citizenship and a security clearance, which rules it out for most new arrivals — plan around it rather than counting on it.
Finance & asset management

T. Rowe Price, founded here in 1937, anchors a real asset-management cluster and moved into a purpose-built headquarters at Harbor Point. Smaller than New York or Boston, but genuine, and the reason downtown Baltimore has a finance layer at all.
Port & logistics
Port of Baltimore, Maryland Port Administration, Amazon, Under Armour distribution, CSX, Tradepoint Atlantic at Sparrows Point
One of the busiest US ports for cars and roll-on/roll-off cargo. The Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed in March 2024 after a container ship struck it; the shipping channel was cleared within months and a replacement bridge is under way, but the traffic pattern around the harbour changed permanently in the meantime.

An unusually dense university city for its size, including Morgan State — one of the country's leading historically Black universities — and MICA, a top art school whose graduates are why Station North has the studio scene it does.

A startup layer grown directly out of NSA alumni, mostly clustered between Baltimore and Annapolis rather than in the city itself. Commercial roles here are more open to non-citizens than the government-facing ones, but not all of them.
