Tax number, a bank account & surviving the lira

The order matters more than the bank. First get a free Turkish tax number (vergi kimlik numarası) — online in minutes with just a passport, before you have any residency. Then open the account in person with your passport, that tax number, proof of a Turkish address and a Turkish mobile number; since 2025-26 banks tightened KYC/AML and many branches now also want a residence permit or YKN, which varies branch to branch rather than bank to bank. Antalya's advantage is volume: with 149,432 residence-permit holders in the province, branches in Konyaaltı, Lara and Alanya open foreigner accounts as ordinary daily business, frequently with Russian- or German-speaking staff, and property buyers arriving with a tapu are a familiar file rather than an awkward one. Garanti BBVA and İş Bankası are the usual general recommendations; DenizBank and state-owned Ziraat are the two most often reported as workable for owners who do not yet hold a permit. Once you are in, the real skill is not holding idle lira.

Total cost
Tax number free. Account maintenance ranges from free to a small annual fee; debit-card and SMS charges are minor. Budget separately for IMEI phone registration if you bring a foreign handset and stay past 120 days.
Time needed
Tax number in minutes; the whole setup — tax number, SIM, account — realistically 1-3 days once you have an address.
Validity
The tax number never expires. The account stays open with normal use; the real upkeep is monetary, because lira balances lose purchasing power fast. Sweep savings into USD/EUR and re-check fees annually.

High confidence·Foreigners settling in Antalya who need a Turkish bank account and a sane way to hold money in a high-inflation economy — including the very large property-buying and remote-working communities here.

Before you start

  • A valid passport (in-date, with entry stamp or e-visa if asked)
  • A Turkish tax number (vergi kimlik numarası) — the non-negotiable first step
  • A Turkish mobile number for SMS verification and mobile-banking activation
  • Proof of a Turkish address (rental contract, tapu or utility bill), and increasingly a residence permit / YKN

Step-by-step

  1. 1

Get a Turkish tax number (vergi numarası) — do this first

Apply for a Potential Tax ID Number free online through the Revenue Administration's Dijital Vergi Dairesi at dijital.gib.gov.tr with just your passport details and an address; it issues a barcoded PDF immediately. Or walk into any Antalya vergi dairesi with your passport and a photocopy and get it in 15-30 minutes. No residency required, valid indefinitely, and required before a bank account, a SIM contract, a title deed or any official transaction.

Get a Turkish SIM before you go to the branch

Banks verify identity and activate mobile banking by SMS to a Turkish number and reject virtual or online numbers, so a real local line comes first. A prepaid SIM from Turkcell, Vodafone or Türk Telekom needs only your passport. Be aware of the separate handset trap covered in the telecom guide: a phone bought abroad works about 120 days before its IMEI is blocked.

  3. 3

Ring the specific branch, not the bank

Since the 2025-26 KYC tightening, whether a branch will open an account on a passport-plus-tax-number file varies branch by branch. In Antalya that variation runs in your favour more often than not, because the coastal branches process foreigners constantly — but it is still a phone call worth making before you spend a morning. Ask two questions: do you need my residence permit, and do you have an officer who handles foreign clients. If you are buying property, say so; the tapu changes the conversation entirely.

    Open the account in branch

Go in person with your passport, tax number, proof of address and Turkish phone number, plus your residence permit and, for buyers, the tapu or sale documentation. KYC is stricter than it used to be, so be ready to explain the source and purpose of your funds — an ordinary question here, not an accusation. Opening usually takes 1-2 hours and the account is live the same day, with a debit card issued or posted.

Set up döviz accounts, cards and a way to bring money in

Open multi-currency (döviz) sub-accounts in USD/EUR/GBP alongside lira and keep savings there, converting only spending money. Contactless is universal, with the domestic Troy scheme alongside Visa and Mastercard. Wise and Revolut send TRY into a Turkish account at near mid-market rates within minutes to hours, though Wise can no longer hold a lira balance, so it is send-only into Türkiye. For cash, use bank ATMs or central döviz offices — never the exchange counters inside the airport terminal, where the spread is far worse.

  • Passport (with entry stamp or e-visa if requested)
  • Turkish tax number (vergi kimlik numarası) — barcoded GİB printout or PDF
  • Proof of a Turkish address (rental contract, tapu/title deed, or utility bill)
  • Turkish mobile number; plus residence permit / YKN if your branch requires it

Things most newcomers don’t know

Antalya is where a Turkish bank branch is least likely to be surprised by you — and most likely to speak your language.

With the country's second-largest foreign resident population concentrated along one shore, coastal branches have foreign-client desks as a matter of routine, commonly with Russian- or German-speaking staff. A file that would generate a long negotiation at an inland branch is ordinary business in Konyaaltı or Alanya.

The tax number comes before the bank account, and you can get it online from abroad before you ever land.

Every bank ties the account to your vergi kimlik numarası, so anyone arriving at a branch without one is sent to the tax office first. It is also required to buy property, which is why so many Antalya arrivals need it before they have anywhere to live.

Whether a bank takes you on a passport alone has quietly tightened — many branches now want the residence permit.

Banks strengthened KYC/AML compliance in 2025-26, so the old 'any tourist opens an account with passport plus tax number' is no longer reliable, and the rule varies branch to branch rather than bank to bank. Calling ahead saves a wasted morning far more often than switching bank does.

If you take rent from a holiday let, that money has a tax life of its own — do not let it just sit in the current account.

A great many foreign owners here let their flat out for part of the year. Rental income is taxable in Türkiye and, once you cross the residency test, so is income from home. Keeping the letting income in a separate sub-account from the start makes the annual filing survivable and makes the döviz sweep obvious.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Walking into a branch before getting a tax number — you'll be sent to the vergi dairesi and lose the day.
  • Assuming any bank will take a tourist on a passport alone; post-2025 KYC means many demand a residence permit.
  • Parking a lira balance month after month instead of sweeping the surplus into döviz.
  • Changing money at the airport rather than a central döviz office or a bank ATM — the spread is materially worse.
