There is no post-arrival registration in the US: your I-94 record is your status. In the first weeks you need a Social Security number if work-authorised, or an ITIN if not. California's distinctive pressure is timing — the DMV's guidance gives 20 days to register a vehicle brought into the state and the licence rule is tighter still, against Orange County appointment queues measured in weeks. California also issues an AB 60 licence to residents who cannot document lawful presence, valid for driving and explicitly not a federal identity document. Anaheim's local wrinkle is employment rather than law: an economy built on hospitality means a lot of shift, seasonal and part-year work, and a sponsored status that assumes continuous full-time employment sits awkwardly with that.
Read the full step-by-step guideCalifornia gives you 20 days from becoming a resident to register a vehicle you brought with you, and expects a licence sooner than that. Two California-specific traps sit downstream: registering an out-of-state vehicle generally requires a smog certification, and a car built to federal rather than California emission standards can be refused registration if it is too new and has too few miles, so 'I'll just drive my car out' is not always available. Registration fees are calculated partly on the vehicle's value, so they are markedly higher than in most states. What is local rather than statewide is the geography — Anaheim sits at the junction of the 5, the 57 and the 91, and the 91 eastbound is regularly ranked among the most congested corridors in the United States.
Read the full step-by-step guideYou can open a US account without a Social Security number: federal rules let a bank use your passport number and country of issuance, or an ITIN, as the identifying number. The credit problem is the standard American one and it bites here because Orange County landlords screen aggressively in a tight market. The specifically local wrinkle is income documentation. A large share of Anaheim's employment is hourly, seasonal or shift-based, and letting agents' screening models want two or three times the rent in stable monthly income — so variable hours, a second job or overtime that fluctuates all need to be documented properly rather than averaged in your head.
Read the full step-by-step guideCoverage comes from an employer, from Covered California — the state's own marketplace, not HealthCare.gov — or from Medi-Cal if your income qualifies. California is one of a small group of states that kept an individual mandate after the federal penalty was zeroed out, so being uninsured carries a state tax penalty administered through your Franchise Tax Board return. The Orange County specific is CalOptima Health, a County Organized Health System created by the Board of Supervisors: if you qualify for Medi-Cal here you are enrolled with CalOptima rather than choosing between commercial managed-care plans as you would in Los Angeles or Santa Clara counties. It covers more than one in four county residents.
Read the full step-by-step guideThe US has no SIM registration requirement, so getting connected is trivially easy: buy a prepaid SIM or eSIM and it works immediately. The friction is postpaid contracts, which run a credit check you cannot pass on arrival. What is local is resilience. Power here is delivered by Anaheim Public Utilities, the city's own utility, so outage information and alerts come from the city rather than from the big investor-owned utility that covers the rest of Orange County. Autumn Santa Ana wind events are the trigger for red-flag warnings, and in the canyon neighbourhoods for evacuation warnings that arrive by phone.
Read the full step-by-step guideThe income tax picture is identical to San Jose's and Sacramento's, because it is state law: graduated rates to a 13.3% top marginal rate including the mental health services surcharge, State Disability Insurance deducted on every dollar of wages since the ceiling was removed in 2024, and capital gains taxed as ordinary income with no preferential state rate. What differs locally is at the till and on the property bill. Anaheim's combined sales tax is 7.75% — the Orange County baseline, with no city district tax on top — which is meaningfully below several neighbouring cities and well below Los Angeles County. Property tax runs on Proposition 13, so your bill is set by what you paid rather than by what the street pays. And the city's own budget leans unusually hard on a 15% transient occupancy tax paid by hotel guests rather than by residents.

Several California cities run their own rent stabilisation ordinances on top of state law. Anaheim does not. Your only protection is the statewide Tenant Protection Act, which caps annual increases at 5% plus regional inflation to a 10% maximum and requires just cause for eviction — and which only applies to buildings over 15 years old, so a new-build complex in the Platinum Triangle may be exempt entirely. Ask in writing whether the specific unit is covered before you sign. In neighbouring Santa Ana the answer would be different; here it usually is not.
The DMV's own guidance gives you 20 days to register a vehicle you brought into the state, and the licence requirement for a resident who drives is tighter still — commonly cited as 10 days, though it is worth confirming the current day count with the DMV directly. This is not the 30, 60 or 90 days most states allow. Orange County DMV appointments book out weeks ahead. Book the appointment before you have unpacked.
California limited residential security deposits to one month's rent for deposits taken from 1 July 2024, furnished or unfurnished, with a narrow exception allowing two months for small landlords who are natural persons owning no more than two rental properties totalling no more than four units. Letting agents in Orange County still quote the old two-month norm out of habit. The law changed; the ask is not.
Anaheim Public Utilities is the city's own not-for-profit electric and water utility — the only municipally owned one in Orange County, running since 1894. Practically, that means three things. Rates are among the lowest in the county and are set by the city council rather than by the state regulator. Every 'how to set up Southern California Edison' guide you find online is wrong for this address. And outage, rebate and payment-plan programmes are run by the city, so the place to call is Anaheim, not a statewide call centre.
Anaheim is 50 square miles and splits into two very different housing markets. West and central Anaheim is flat, dense, older and cheaper, and everything is inside the 5 and 91 corridors. Anaheim Hills, east of the 55, is canyon country with larger houses, a different school district and a wildfire hazard rating that affects insurance. The 91 eastbound in the afternoon is among the most congested stretches of road in the United States; if you live in the Hills and work in the Resort you are driving against it, which is the good direction.
Hospitality, theme parks, the convention centre and the arenas run on evenings, weekends and public holidays, and a very large share of Anaheim's workforce is on that pattern. If you are moving into a conventional Monday-to-Friday job, expect the city's rhythm to run against yours: restaurants are busiest when the parks close, weekday mornings are quiet, and traffic peaks around a convention schedule as much as around rush hour. Check the Anaheim Convention Center calendar before booking anything near the Resort.
Disneyland Resort, Anaheim Convention Center, Great Wolf Lodge, the Resort district hotels, OC Vibe at Honda Center
Anaheim is anchored by a single employer to an unusual degree: the Disneyland Resort employs around 36,000 cast members and is the largest employer in Orange County. Add the convention centre — the largest exhibition facility on the West Coast — and hospitality is not one sector here, it is the economic base. That concentration cuts both ways, and the 2020 closure demonstrated exactly how.
Boeing (Huntington Beach/Seal Beach), Northrop Grumman, Anduril Industries (Costa Mesa), a deep tier-two supplier base across north Orange County
Orange County's older industrial spine, built around machining, composites and avionics rather than headquarters. Most roles need US citizenship and a clearance, which makes it context for new arrivals rather than an accessible market — but the supplier tier hires more openly.
Edwards Lifesciences (Irvine), Alcon, Glaukos, Masimo, B. Braun (Irvine), the wider Irvine device cluster
Orange County is one of the densest medical-device clusters in the world, concentrated a few freeway exits south in Irvine rather than in Anaheim itself. It is the county's best-paid non-tech sector and a genuine reason to be in this metro rather than in Los Angeles.
Kaiser Permanente Anaheim, AHMC Anaheim Regional Medical Center, Providence St. Joseph (Orange), CHOC Children's (Orange), UCI Health
The largest employment sector not tied to the tourism cycle, and the most reliable local hiring when tourism turns. CHOC in neighbouring Orange is one of the region's two paediatric referral centres and is a short drive from anywhere in the city.
Anaheim Canyon business park, Northgate González, Kellogg's legacy plant sites, the Tustin Avenue and La Palma industrial corridors
Anaheim Canyon, north-east of the 91, is one of the largest industrial districts in Southern California and the reason the city has a large blue-collar employment base that visitors never see. It is also the part of the local economy least dependent on Disney.
DisneylandForward, OC Vibe at Honda Center, the Platinum Triangle build-out
Two very large approved projects will be building through the rest of this decade. Anaheim approved the DisneylandForward development agreement in May 2024 — a roughly $1.9 billion, ten-year investment with committed community benefits including $30 million for affordable housing — and the Ducks' ownership is redeveloping the land around Honda Center. Construction and the trades are hiring accordingly.
Food · Downtown, Anaheim Boulevard
A 1919 Sunkist citrus packing house converted into a two-storey food hall, with the 1920s Packard showroom next door and an outdoor stage between them.
Local tip: Go on a weekday evening rather than a Saturday, when it fills with families from the Resort. The Filipino, Mexican and Middle Eastern counters are the reason to come; the cocktail bar hidden behind the unmarked door is the reason people stay.
Neighborhood · West Anaheim, Brookhurst between Ball and Broadway
The first formally recognised Arab American district in the United States, designated by the city council in August 2022 after more than twenty years of campaigning — Lebanese, Syrian, Palestinian and Egyptian bakeries, butchers, restaurants and hookah lounges along a mile of Brookhurst Street.
Local tip: Come for the bakeries in the morning and the grills after 9pm, when the district is at its liveliest. It is a working commercial strip rather than a heritage attraction, which is exactly what the twenty-year campaign was about.
Culture · North and east of downtown
The original 1857 German winemaking colony's street grid, now one of California's largest concentrations of preserved Craftsman, Victorian and Spanish Colonial Revival houses — several hundred of them on the streets around Center Street Promenade.
Local tip: Walk it on a Sunday morning. 'Anaheim' is 'Ana' for the Santa Ana River plus the German 'heim' for home, and this is the only part of the city where that history is still visible on the ground.
Nature · Anaheim Hills, east of the 55
Fifty-eight acres of oak woodland in a canyon at the eastern edge of the city, with trails climbing into the Santa Ana Mountains foothills straight out of a residential street.
Local tip: Go early between March and May when the hills are still green — from July they are golden, hot and closed on red-flag days. The canyon holds shade far longer than the ridge trails do.
Nightlife · South-east Anaheim, either side of the 57
Angel Stadium and the Ducks' Honda Center face each other across the freeway, with ARTIC's cathedral-like transit hall between them and a multi-billion-dollar mixed-use district being built around the arena.
Local tip: Take Metrolink or the Pacific Surfliner into ARTIC for a game rather than driving — the walk is ten minutes and it saves you the stadium car park and the post-event queue onto the 57 entirely.
Landmark · Downtown Anaheim
The pedestrianised heart of the old downtown, with the MUZEO museum in the 1908 Carnegie Library building and a Thursday farmers market that has been running for over a decade.
Local tip: This is where Anaheim is a normal city rather than a resort. Most visitors never leave the Harbor Boulevard corridor two miles south and have no idea it exists.
