'The bridge' — nobody says King Fahd Causeway. 'Rayihin al-jisr?' means 'are you going to Bahrain?' and is a standard Thursday question.

'What' — the Gulf form, shared with Bahrain across the water. Riyadh says 'wesh'. The Eastern Province speaks more like Manama than like the capital.

Saudi Aramco, headquartered fifteen minutes away in Dhahran. Locally it is a unit of measurement — jobs, housing and schools are all described relative to it.

'Good / fine / okay'. 'Zayn?' as a question means 'alright?'; 'mu zayn' is the negative. You will use this a dozen times a day.

allah yaʿteek al-ʿaafiya
'May God give you wellness' — the everyday thanks to anyone who has done work for you. Reply 'allah yaafeek'.

Al-Thuqbah — the older, denser district behind the Corniche where the cheap eating, the tailors and the electronics shops are. Locals go there; visitors go to the malls.

The Corniche — sixteen kilometres of seafront that is the city's living room after sunset, and effectively deserted in the middle of a summer day.
