Sandia National Laboratories, Kirtland Air Force Base, Air Force Research Laboratory, the contractor tier around both
Sandia is one of the largest employers in New Mexico with roughly 11,500 people in the state, and it sits inside Kirtland Air Force Base on the city's southern edge — one of the largest bases in the world. Together they are the backbone of Albuquerque's professional job market. Most positions require US citizenship and a security clearance, which makes this context rather than an accessible market for many new arrivals.
Semiconductors & advanced manufacturing
Intel (Rio Rancho), Ebon Solar, BayoTech, Array Technologies, Sandia Science & Technology Park tenants
Intel's Rio Rancho campus, twenty minutes across the river in Sandoval County, is the largest private employer in the state and has been through several expansion cycles. New Mexico has been aggressively recruiting semiconductor and clean-energy manufacturing on the back of it.
Film & television production
Netflix at ABQ Studios, NBCUniversal's Albuquerque production hub, a deep local crew base
New Mexico's refundable film production tax credit built a genuine industry here, and Netflix's acquisition of ABQ Studios in 2018 turned it into a permanent base rather than a location. The crew, grip, catering and post-production ecosystem employs far more people than the on-screen work suggests, and it is one of the few sectors here that hires newcomers readily.
Health care
Presbyterian Healthcare Services, University of New Mexico Hospital, Lovelace Health System, Sandia and Kirtland medical operations
The largest employment sector not tied to federal spending. UNM Hospital is the state's only Level I trauma centre and its academic medical centre, which means the region's most complex care all routes through Albuquerque.
Higher education & research
University of New Mexico, Central New Mexico Community College, the Sandia Science & Technology Park, the UNM optics and photonics cluster
UNM anchors both the health system and a research economy in optics, space and materials that feeds the laboratories. CNM is one of the larger community colleges in the country and is the main route into the technician roles the semiconductor and laboratory employers need.
Aerospace, space & logistics
Spaceport-adjacent suppliers, Air Force Research Laboratory's space vehicles directorate, Amazon's Albuquerque fulfilment operations, the I-25 and I-40 freight corridors
Albuquerque sits at the crossing of two interstates and has grown a real distribution sector on it. The space work is mostly research and government rather than launch — the state's spaceport is three hours south — but the directorate and its contractors are a substantial technical employer.
