Before you start
- A signed employment contract with an Ethiopian-registered employer, who sponsors the whole process
- Academic and professional credentials, legalised in the issuing country and authenticated in Ethiopia
- The employer's justification for hiring a foreign national, including a knowledge-transfer or succession plan
- Passport with adequate validity
Step-by-step
- 1
Employer applies to the Ministry of Labour and Skills
The work permit is the first instrument and it authorises a specific role with a specific employer. Self-sponsorship into employment is not a route in Ethiopia.

Get your credentials legalised at home
Degrees and professional certificates generally need legalisation in the issuing country before they can be authenticated in Ethiopia. This is the step that adds weeks and it cannot be done from Addis.

Apply for the work visa
Filed through the Ethiopian eVisa portal or an embassy once the work permit exists. The visa allows you to travel for work; it is not itself residence.

Apply for the residence permit with ICS
Within the period your entry visa allows, apply to the Immigration and Citizenship Service. The residence permit is what legalises long-term stay and ongoing employment.

Renew ahead of expiry
ICS recommends starting renewal at least 30 days before the current permit expires. Work permits are commonly annual, so this comes round quickly.

Check whether you qualify for the Ethiopian Origin ID instead
If you have an Ethiopian parent or grandparent, or are married to an Ethiopian national, the Origin ID is a far better instrument and removes the work permit chain entirely.

Things most newcomers don’t know
The Ethiopian Origin ID is the most under-used document in this city.
If you have an Ethiopian parent or grandparent, the 'yellow card' gives you most of the rights of a national — including the right to work without a work permit — while leaving your existing nationality intact. People who qualify routinely spend years on annual work permits because nobody at their employer knew to ask. Check your family documents before you start the ordinary process.

You cannot arrive and then find a job.
Ethiopia requires the job offer, the sponsoring employer and the work permit before the work visa issues. There is no self-sponsorship, no jobseeker route, and no conversion from a tourist or business visa. This is a harder rule than in Kenya or Uganda, and it makes the employer relationship the whole of your immigration position.

Credential authentication is the step that surprises everyone.
Certificates usually need legalisation in the issuing country and then authentication in Ethiopia through the foreign-affairs channel. Neither half can be done from your desk in Addis, and the home-country half cannot be done once you have left. Start it before you resign, not after you arrive.

Ethiopia is not in the East African Community, and none of that machinery applies.
No common-market work rights, no East Africa Tourist Visa, no partner-state fee waiver. A Kenyan, Ugandan, Rwandan or Tanzanian passport gets no advantage here. People relocating within the region assume some continuity of process and there is none — Ethiopia's system is entirely its own.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Arriving on a tourist or business visa intending to find work and convert.
- Leaving credential legalisation until after you have left your home country.
- Going through the ordinary work permit route when you qualify for the Ethiopian Origin ID.
- Assuming East African Community arrangements apply because Ethiopia is in the region.
- Leaving an annual renewal to the last fortnight — ICS advises starting at least 30 days out.
