Before you start
- A valid photo ID — under BCEAO Instruction n° 003-03-2025 a passport is sufficient on its own; the carte de séjour is one accepted option among several, not a precondition
- Proof of address less than three months old: a SODECI water or CIE electricity bill, a certificat de résidence from the mairie, a lease plus a landlord's attestation, or a sworn affidavit of domicile
- Two identical passport photos — not a legal requirement, a bank one, and the commonest reason a same-day opening fails
- A payslip and a certificat de travail if you want the salary-domiciliation route
Step-by-step
- 1
Open a mobile-money wallet on arrival
Orange Money, MTN MoMo, Moov Money and Wave all open in minutes on a passport. Orange explicitly lists the biometric passport, ECOWAS biometric ID, carte de résident and consular card as acceptable. Until you verify in person you sit in a low tier capped at XOF 200,000 a month; verified, you can hold up to XOF 2,000,000 and top up XOF 10,000,000 a month. Wallets from the same issuer are aggregated for those ceilings, so a second Orange wallet does not double your limit.

Open the bank account inside your first three months
Société Générale Côte d'Ivoire's published eligibility says it plainly: ECOWAS nationals present a national ID or consular document, and all other foreigners present a passport with an entry stamp less than three months old, OR residency documents for a stay exceeding three months. Beyond three months the second branch of that rule bites. The account can be opened the same day if the file is complete.

Domicile your salary — it unlocks everything else
Domiciling your salary is one of the nineteen legally free services, and it waives Société Générale's XOF 50,000 minimum deposit. It is also your evidence of regular income for the droit au compte, and — since BCEAO's April 2026 note on non-residents who acquire UEMOA resident status — your payslips are the instrument that authorises transferring income out of the zone at all.

Know the nineteen free services, and say so at the counter
BCEAO Instruction n° 004-06-2014 makes nineteen services free with no conditions attached — its Article 2 says so in terms. Account opening and closure, monthly statements, salary domiciliation, cash deposits and withdrawals at your own bank, own-bank ATM withdrawals, card payments anywhere in the union, intra-bank transfers, receiving national and international transfers, and setting up standing orders are all on the list. Cite the instruction by number if you are quoted a fee.

Budget for the fees that are not free
Société Générale's January 2026 schedule puts monthly account maintenance at XOF 4,950 for a chèque account and XOF 990 for the basic Compte ECO, an international Visa Classic at XOF 30,000 a year, a UEMOA transfer at XOF 5,000, and withdrawals outside the union at 2.2% with a XOF 2,750 minimum. Sending euros abroad is the real cost centre — file fee, a 0.6% levy, an exchange authorisation, a SWIFT charge and 1.25% commission stack to roughly 3.4% on a XOF 2,000,000 transfer.

Documents you’ll need
- Passport (with an entry stamp under three months old, if you are using that route)

Things most newcomers don’t know
Open the account in month one and you can skip the residence card entirely.
Société Générale accepts a passport with an entry stamp under three months old as an alternative to residency documents. Past that window the bank wants the titre de séjour, which you may not have for months. This one detail can save a new arrival an entire quarter without a salary account.

Three refusals and the central bank can force a bank to open an account for you.
Article 8 of UEMOA Règlement n° 15/2002 gives anyone established in a member state with a regular income the right to an account, and lets the BCEAO designate a bank if three refuse in succession. The income threshold is XOF 50,000 a month. Practically nobody knows this exists.

A bounced cheque is a five-year, union-wide ban.
Cheque incidents are recorded in the CIP-UEMOA register at the BCEAO and banks must consult it before issuing a chequebook. An old incident from a previous posting in Senegal or Mali will surface in Abidjan. Use cards and transfers; the cheque culture here carries a tail risk most newcomers never consider.

Not every bank is on the union's instant-payment rail.
When the BCEAO published the list of PI-SPI participants in April 2026, Côte d'Ivoire had eighteen — including Ecobank, BOA, Coris, SIB, UBA, Orange Money and MTN — but Société Générale, NSIA and Wave were absent. If instant bank-to-wallet transfers matter to how you actually live, that absence is a live reason to pick a different bank.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Waiting for the carte de résident before trying to open, and losing the three-month passport window
- Bringing an address document more than three months old — an automatic rejection under the KYC instruction
- Turning up without the two passport photos, which is the single commonest same-day blocker
- Paying for any of the nineteen services BCEAO made unconditionally free
- Using a chèque de guichet at XOF 2,000 a time when a card withdrawal at your own bank is free
- Trying to move money out of the zone without payslips — intermediaries are now responsible for checking that transfers match justified income
